Science
Welcome to the Science Department – Where Curiosity Comes Alive!
At Banbridge High School, Science isn’t just a subject – it’s an adventure! Our vibrant department is dedicated to sparking curiosity and inspiring discovery. Every pupil is immersed in a wide range of scientific experiences designed to ignite a passion for learning and exploration.
Science is hands-on, and we believe the best way to learn is by questioning, experimenting, and discovering. Our programmes encourage pupils to think creatively and critically, developing enquiring minds in a safe, supportive environment. Through practical work, students gain essential skills for safe collaborative working, problem-solving, interpreting data, and presenting conclusions with confidence.
Key Stage Three – Building Strong Foundations
In Years 8–10, pupils explore all three scientific disciplines – Biology, Chemistry, and Physics – through exciting topics that prepare them for the challenges of Key Stage Four. Our approach ensures every learner develops a solid understanding and a love for science.
Key Stage Four – Expanding Horizons
At KS4, we offer a range of pathways to suit every learner:
CCEA Double Award Science
Year 11
• Biology Unit B1: Cells, Living Processes and Biodiversity
• Chemistry Unit C1: Structures, Trends, Chemical Reactions, Quantitative Chemistry and Analysis
• Physics Unit P1: Motion, Force, Moments, Energy, Density, Kinetic Theory, Radioactivity, Nuclear Fission & Fusion
Year 12
• Biology Unit B2: Body Systems, Genetics, Microorganisms and Health
• Chemistry Unit C2: Further Chemical Reactions, Rates and Equilibrium, Calculations and Organic Chemistry
• Physics Unit P2: Waves, Light, Electricity, Magnetism, Electromagnetism and Space Physics
• Unit 7: Practical Skills - this comprises Unit 7 Biology, Unit 7 Chemistry and Unit 7 Physics.
How it is Assessed
3 x 1 hour written examinations (Biology, Physics and Chemistry) in Year 11
• 3 x 1 hour 15 min written examinations (Biology, Physics and Chemistry) in Year 12
• 3 x 1 hour Practical examination (Booklet A) followed by 3 x 30 min written examination (Booklet)
CCEA Single Award Science
Unit 1 Biology
Unit 2 Chemistry
Unit 3 Physics
Unit 4 Practical Skills - Practical skills assessment - External written examination
How it is Assessed
3 x 1 hour written examinations (Biology, Physics and Chemistry)
1 x 2 hour Practical (experimental) examination followed by a 1 hour written examination (Booklet B)
OCN Applied Science (Certificate and Extended Certificate)
• Physical Processes.
• Life Processes and Living Things.
• Materials and their Chemical Properties.
How it is Assessed
100% Internally assessed portfolio work
This is NOT suitable foundation for Post-16 Science.
Key Stage Five – Specialising for the Future
At KS5, we offer CCEA GCE A Level Life and Health Sciences (Single Award) – a dynamic course that nurtures enthusiasm for science while strengthening practical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills. Students also gain a deeper understanding of scientific issues that impact everyday life. This course prepares pupils for further scientific study at University or Higher Level apprenticeships.
Our Vision
When pupils leave Banbridge High School, we want them to feel confident and empowered. Through the knowledge and skills gained in Science, they’ll be ready to make informed decisions about further education, careers, and lifestyle choices.
